The Stronger-Leaner-Better Personal Program
Dr. Glenn Hyman works with people throughout the U.S. and Canada via phone consultations. Denver residents are welcome to come see him at his office. He specializes in creating natural treatment programs for common chronic health symptoms such as:

  • Weight Loss
  • Insomnia
  • Stress (Adrenal Fatigue)
  • Digestion
  • Chronic Sports Injuries / Poor sports performance

How can Dr. Hyman help you?
Over the years I've seen dramatic improvements occurring in the health of patients who implement simple diet and lifestyle changes along with lab-based nutritional supplement programs. By re-balancing your body perhaps you can finally get rid of your symptoms.

Many of my patients have been to several different doctors and were told that there was nothing wrong with them. However, unexplained symptoms still exist. In the absence of outright disease, chronic health problems may be the result of functional imbalances in your body.

Prior to your initial consultation, you'll complete a comprehensive new patient questionnaire and fax it to our office. I will review your questionnaire before we speak. During your appointment we will talk about your personal and family health history, and discuss your present situation in depth. I will explain the how initial lab tests relate your situation and start you on a lifestyle improvement program.

What is Dr. Hyman looking for?
With the information gathered from your questionnaire, consultation, and your lab tests, I'll assess the function of two key body systems. These systems are the Stress Hormonal System and the Digestive System. Dysfunction and imbalances in these systems can lead to chronic unexplained symptoms. They aren't necessarily diseased, they simply are not functioning optimally.

The Stress Hormonal System. Your hormones have a powerful influence on your energy levels, mood, and even body fat stores. Imbalances here can lead to weight gain, fatigue, depression, feelings of burnout and more. Restoring balance to your hormonal rhythms can help resolve these symptoms. Stress profoundly affects your body. It comes from a wide range of sources: relationships, money, work status, exercise (too much or too little), and so on. Quality of diet and sleep habits are additional sources of potential stress

A typical patient will come to me with fatigue symptoms and trouble losing weight. This person will have a lot of job stress, she will work too much or dislike her job. On top of that this patient may spend 2-3 hours working out 4-6 times a week. She may eat a lot of processed foods.
Each of these factors is a source of stress on her body. Over time, these stressors contribute to chronic symptoms, usually fatigue, weight gain and trouble sleeping.

Lab Test #1: Stress Hormone Profile
The stress hormone profile provides us with a snap shot of how your body is dealing with stress. This lab test use a saliva samples to measure two key stress-related hormones: Cortisol and DHEA.

Cortisol directs a lot of processes in your body, including providing fuel for your body to burn. To do this it breaks down muscle and stores fat. It keeps your body in a chronic fight or flight response. Altered Cortisol levels can disrupt your sleep, make you tired, and make it impossible to lose weight. DHEA is Cortisol's counterpart. It helps your body recover. It directs repair and recovery processes. If your DHEA levels are down, it's a good sign that you need a comprehensive healing program.

These two hormones have a powerful influence on the sex hormones like testosterone (men), estrogen and progesterone (women). Since these hormones share the same chemical building blocks, stress hormone imbalances may lead to sex hormone imbalances. This may be why stressed out people have lowered sex drives.

These hormones can almost always be re-balanced naturally- without using hormone replacement- but a lab test is needed to get an accurate starting point. Then the underlying factors (sleep, stress, exercise, diet) can be addressed, and your body can start moving back towards optimum hormone balance.

Of course, sometimes patients do need hormone replacement therapy, but this is usually required for the more severe cases.

The Digestive system. The digestive system "feeds" the rest of your body by absorbing the foods you eat. Many of my patients have digestive symptoms like gas, bloating and heartburn. Some have had these symptoms for so long that they think it's normal. Chronic digestive stress can be a tremendous strain on your body. Fatigue, symptoms of mild depression or anxiety, and weight gain can all follow. Careful dietary monitoring can often lead to significant improvement in the digestive system. This leads to patients feeling much better.

Lab Test #2: Digestive System Pathogen Screen
A healthy digestive system is crucial to feeling good. The old saying that, "You are what you eat," isn't true. You are what you digest and absorb. Your digestive system feeds every other system in your body, and if it isn't working correctly, you'll never be healthy.

Most of the problems in the digestive system come from diet, and we certainly will deal with that in your program. But there are other sources of digestive system dysfunction.

I've observed that many patients have some sort of pathogen in their digestive systems. These latent infections may or may not have obvious symptoms, but they do have a tremendous impact on the body.
This test requires a stool sample which is then analyzed for several pathogens including:

  • H. Pylori, the bacterium that causes ulcers
  • Entamoeba Histolytica, a serious pathogen that destroys health
  • Cryptosporidium, from tainted water, which can cause diarrhea
  • Blastocystis Hominis, which can last for years in the intestines

Patients pick up these (and other) microscopic "bugs" from a variety of sources like undercooked food, international travel, and encounters with other infected people (kissing, etc). These patients are often shocked that they have a parasite, but once these unwelcomed guest are eradicated, amazing improvements often follow. (Note: If this test finds an infection, a medical doctor will have to treat you with appropriate antibiotics. We can arrange referrals if you don't have a doctor that you work with.)

It never ceases to amaze me how the presence of an undiagnosed pathogen in the digestive system can destroy a person’s health. Frequently, finding these “bugs”, eradicating them, and repairing the damage they’ve left behind is the single biggest key to a patient’s recovery. These “bugs” can be a tremendous drain on the stress-response system.

Together, these tests present a powerful picture of how your body is functioning. Correcting these two systems usually leads to dramatic improvements.

You can complete your tests very easily at home. Just follow the simple instructions that are included with your package. Everything is explained very clearly. If you have a question, we're just a phone call or an email away.
You collect your samples at home and then FedEx the samples to the lab in pre-paid envelopes. (Most people drop them off at FedEx Kinko's.) The test results will be sent directly to me. I'll analyze and interpret all of your information, and then prepare a comprehensive treatment plan.

Remember, the lab results are combined with the information that I'll gather from your Starting Point Assessment and your Initial Consultation. Once we get that snapshot of what's going on, we'll get to work on bringing you back towards balance.

What tools will Dr. Hyman use to create your program?
Everyone is different, and every situation is unique, so a "cookie-cutter" approach to treating patients doesn't work. That's why I'll work closely with you to create your individual program. This will include dietary changes, exercise prescription, sleep strategies, stress reduction advice, lifestyle changes, and supplement programs.

Diet changes: I'll make sure you're drinking enough water, eating the right foods, and avoiding certain foods that may be reacting poorly with your body. Most people eat 3-5 times a day. Eating foods that are hard to digest, make you feel lousy, or are of low quality can have a powerfully bad influence on your health. By correcting your nutrition, we'll be able to eliminate the dietary stresses on your body systems.

  • Exercise prescription: I can help you figure how much exercise is right for you, and which kinds you should do. Everyone is different, and their exercise needs are different. Too little exercise and too much exercise are both bad and will drain your body. Get it just right, and you'll start feeling better (and looking better).
  • Sleep strategies: Poor sleep can destroy your health. Most of my patients have sleep troubles of some sort. This robs your body of its chance to fully regenerate. If you have sleep problems, this will be among the first things we'll try to improve because it's so crucial to good health.
  • Stress reduction advice and lifestyle changes: Examples of stress management vary widely. Some people need more time with family and less time at work. The chronic stressors we all experience are often a major source of health complaints and need to be addressed as part of a comprehensive plan to restore your health.
  • Supplement programs: Once again, everyone is different, so your unique circumstances will dictate which nutritional supplements may help re-balance your body. By combining the information gathered from your new patient forms, your consultation, and your lab tests, I'll put together a personalized supplementation program that can help re-balance your body.

We'll monitor and modify your progress, and make sure you're moving towards feeling better. If not, we'll figure out why and fix it.
